2025–26 Federal Budget

Key Federal Budget takeaways for your personal and business finances.

2025-26 Federal Budget Overview

The 2025-26 Federal Budget has been handed down this evening. In his fourth Federal Budget, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has adopted a strategy of fiscal restraint with very limited and targeted interventions. As such, it is clear that this budget focuses on maintaining the status quo rather than driving transformational change.

  • Fiscal Restraint: The budget prioritises stability, with a focus on supporting struggling Australians while addressing the ongoing housing crisis.
  • Housing Crisis: Measures have been introduced to tackle the Australian housing affordability issue, which continues to be a pressing concern for many citizens.
However, there are some notable omissions in the 2025 Federal Budget:

  • Foreign Investment: No new measures have been announced to attract inward investment from foreign businesses. Despite global competition for investment and calls for a more competitive tax regime, the budget presents a surprisingly passive stance on this matter.
  • Lack of Tax Reform: There are no substantial reforms or incentives aimed at supporting Australian businesses. This is a missed opportunity, as many had hoped for tax measures that could fuel innovation, growth, and job creation in the local market.
While the 2025 Federal Budget does offer support to those struggling and makes efforts to address the housing crisis, it falls short in fostering a more competitive environment for both foreign and domestic businesses.
